Seoul, the capital of the Republic of Korea, has a rich historical background as it has served as the capital of Baekje and Joseon in the past. Over the years, the city has been referred to by various names including Wiryeseong, Hansan, Hanseong, Hanyang, Yangju, Namgyeong, and Gyeongseong. Archaeological evidence, such as the prehistoric dwellings found in the Amsa-song site, indicates that Seoul has been inhabited since the Neolithic period. Throughout its history, Seoul has played a significant role as one of Korea’s major administrative centers, spanning over two thousand years from the Three Kingdoms period to the Goryeo and Joseon dynasties.
